The Story

6-7’ tall x 10’ wide. ‘Superba’ Littleleaf Lilac (Syringa microphylla) is a terrific shrub for those who love the fragrance and beauty of lilac blossoms, but want more consistent and prolific blooming. ‘Superba’ bears small, deep-green, slightly fuzzy leaves upon a fairly uniform, attractive framework from mid-spring onwards. Prune lightly to maintain shape in early winter, but bear in mind that lilacs bloom on wood grown the previous season - hard winter pruning will severely diminish the spring show. Plant in average, well-drained soils that are moisture retentive. Syringa microphylla ‘Superba’ is a lover of alkaline soils and is therefore a good choice as a foundation shrub. Full sun is preferred, though partial sun is tolerated with a decrease in bloom.
