The Story

Artemisia cana (Silver Sagebrush) thrives in a range of planting sites, ranging from moist meadows to dry and high elevations. Depending on location and elevation this sub-shrub can grow anywhere from 2 to 5 feet tall, making it a versatile native alternative to more commonly available evergreen shrubs. Also known by common names including silver sagebrush, sticky sagebrush, silver wormwood, hoary sagebrush, and dwarf sagebrush.

This abundant shrub is an important winter forage source for wildlife and was traditionally used by Native Americans for fuel and as a decoction to remedy coughing.

Artemisia cana can handle annual precipitation ranging from 8 to 40 inches and tolerates both seasonal flooding and drought. Plant in full sun locations in well-draining soil. It can be pruned, and pruning tends to create lusher growth. Tolerates hedging. Does not tolerate salt.
